The Manhattan

The Manhattan

The Manhattan is one of the great cocktails of all time. The story goes that it originated, in New York City back in the 1870s as part of a social event, the term "Manhattan" stuck as part location, part social status.

Traditionally made with rye whiskey (although bourbon OK), this great cocktail is simple to make and even for non-whiskey drinkers, can be a real treat.  When I sip on on one, I feel like I should be in a tweed jacket, a scarf, or maybe slowly puffing on a cigar...it has that kind of effect.

Making these at home are a great way to establish yourself as a "throwback" bar keep and host, and not some new-fangled hipster. These are the kind of drinks a man needs in his repertoire for sure.

The Manhattan

4 oz bourbon/rye
2 oz sweet vermouth
2 dashes bitters
2-4 drops maraschino liqueur
1 frozen cherry

Pour all ingredients into shaker/stirring pitcher and stir 15-30 times (with ice). Strain into your favorite martini or coupe-style glass.

Garnish with frozen cherry.

I had made the Whiskey Sours only a few times and always loved them but felt that they were a little too much work honestly. I had remembered that I needed a bunch of egg yolks for something (probably a carbonara) and kept the whites frozen for
